To satisfy everybody, I had to take EggEgg to see a real speech therapist. Tonton & I privately think that it's totally unnecessary. On the day of assessment, EggEgg can say 8 words. The speech therapist's assessment report labelled EggEgg as having a "moderate level of expressive language delay". *Sigh*
Update June 2009:
We had 5 fortnightly group therapy session where I sat with EggEgg and played with him for 45 minute each. I had hyped up this whole event, conjuring images of splendid toys, telling him, "Tomorrow we are going to see the Talking Auntie who is going to teach you how to talk. Would you like to learn how to talk?" -Umph!
"There's lots of toys there, but you must say something when you play, otherwise we won't play, ok?" -Umph!
After the first session of playing with farm animals, EggEgg came home and was not shy anymore to make sounds like "Moo moo (cow)" "Meh meh (sheep)" "Gok gok (chicken)"
Second session of playing with food, EggEgg was much more willing to use single syllabus words at home. He was able to say "banana"! Hooray. The longest every word we've heard him made.
After the 3rd and 4th sessions, even Daddy caught on the speech therapy spirit. We repeat the same simple words at home over and over again. No more speaking in complicated sentences. No more accepting Umph! and Uh! as proper responses. Asking questions that requires speaking instead of "Yes/No". Lots of praise and rewards for EggEgg's efforts.
By the time the fifth session is over, EggEgg was much more confident with the use of words and I could tell he was pleased with himself too. He made good effort in doing 2 word sentences.
