It was 4am and I could hear EggEgg screaming from the nursery upstairs. Lately he'd been awake often at night. Nightmares, maybe? I staggered dreamily upstairs, and the little fella became peaceful once more when he is in my arms.
We laid down together on the bed, cuddling in the warmth. EggEgg's favorite sleeping position is to rest his head on top of my neck. Boy, his head weights a ton, and sometimes I wake up with a neck ache to find him still lying on top of me.
After an hour of listening to each other's quiet breathing and his musical babbling, I sat up and asked, "You couldn't sleep? Me neither. Let's have a cup of hot milk down at the kitchen, shall we?" He got up, pick up my clothes for me to put on, and lead the way down the stairs.
Hot frothed milk and biscuits tasted really good at 5am on a spring morning. Outside, it wasn't even dawn yet. EggEgg is sitting on my lap, enjoying this intimate, tender time alone with me. He had learnt how to dunk his biscuit into the milk the other day. Now he's got his fat fingers covered in froth...
We decided to give sleeping another try. On the way back up to the nursery, we met Mickey Mouse & Mr Bear sitting on the sofa, still "playing" at this unearthly hour. EggEgg went over to round them up for the bedtime. He kissed both of them and dragged them along to the nursery.
Good night, Egg Egg. Off he drifted back into slumber land, ever so peacefully.
"Now, it's my time to sleep", so I thought as I switched off the lights. A moment later, I could feel a playful kick from my tummy. Baby Cola's decided that it's his turn to play for the next hour. Will motherhood ever be easy?
