The neighbour lives next door
Last week during my English teaching session, I taught EggEgg the word "neighbour". This week he has forgotten it again.
I devised a mnemonics for the word Neighbour.
"EggEgg remember it this way, Neighbour sounds like 喱埋 (hide-and seek). Now can you remember it?" EggEgg gave a blank nod.
Feeling confident once more I began, "Let's use it in a sentence. Can you say, 'the neighbour lives next door'?"
EggEgg has tried a gazillion times, but still couldn't follow my sentence.
"The neighbour... the door..."
"The neighbour... on the door..."
"Next to the door"
"The neighbour lives the door..."
Exasperated, I asked, "Who the hell lives next door?"
"The girl!" He answered. (WTF? I've been teaching him to use the word "neighbour" and he answered this?!)
I tried another way. "Let's practice with the word LIVE. Do you know the meaning of Live?" EggEgg nodded blankly again.
"Copy my sentence. The dog lives in the dog house." EggEgg copied.
"The lion lives in the zoo." EggEgg copied.
"So can you say, the neighbour lives next door?" EggEgg said, "The neighbour lives."
I sighed. "The neighbour lives where?"
"The neighbour lives the door."
I wanted to puke blood.
"You there! Stand here and repeat "Next Door" twenty times."
EggEgg complied, "Next door, next door, next door..."
"So where does the neighbour live?" I asked once again.
"The neighbour lives on the door" Argghhhhh!!
"You stand there in the kitchen, and only come see me if you have figure out how to say it."
5 minutes later, he gingerly came to the study and gingerly declared, "Mami, I can say it now: The neighbour... lives... next door."
He blinked at me, unsure of my reaction. I stroke his forehead, touched by his perseverance, and pity him on his slow learning.
"EggEgg, you got it right! You know what... you are really slow. When I was young, I learn much much faster than you." Not giving up yet, I pushed on, "Okay, let's learn some more new vocab for today!"
And there goes another morning of teaching him English. No pain, no gain indeed!

Learning slowly is difficult and frustrating. But, he has the amazing gifts of perseverance and patience. He didn't throw a fit or yell at you. He's a wonderful boy. *big hug*
