Dearest Cola,
Mami has been thinking of a name for you for a long, long while. I wanted something that starts with an "E", just like me, but it seems like all the Eric's, Eason's, Edison's that we knew turned out to be... disagreeable folks. We almost named you "Alex", after my brother and our best friends, but changed our mind at the last minute because they seemed like... unreliable folks.
I was growing desperate, the 60-day birth certificate deadline was looming close. One morning, I read the newspaper article about the winner of the latest song competition, and your name Isaac just hit me in the face. It was perfect:
1. Five-character word
2. Easy to pronounce
3. There are no dopey celebrity called Isaac
4. and it meant, "He who laughs" in the Bible.
As for your Chinese name, 劉天燿, you were named after Daddy's favourite uncle, a very warm, intelligent doctor who lives in Taiwan. Did you know, your straight, prominent nose looks remarkably like his when you were born?
To me, that Chinese name have another layer of meaning. It means "Glory of God". I have sought God and find calmness in knowing that he is present with us beyond this life. I am no longer struggling with fear of the unknown. There was also a new period of reconciliation between me and your grandparents. You brought peace to our household and in our hearts.
