Vampires of Time?

The other day my friend Alex, who was watching his 9-month-old Annika leisurely feeding, reminded me that babies are "vampires of time". Having said that, he mumbled some excuse and went back to his study to resume his daily hobby of stock watching.

New parents with very little time to spare. Hmm...

Now I could fully understand why my mum was so stern and disciplined with us when we were little. She has me & my bro to look after and a house to run, and hence was very eager to turn us into an independent beings. I remember one morning when I was about 3 years old, brushing my own teeth clumsily, Mum reminded me, "you're a big girl now, and you should be able to do this, this and this." I can't remember what she expecteded me to do, but I was stunned by the words "Big Girl".

The downside is, the more independent I am, the less I'll need her. And the less I'll miss her. Eventually, she miss me but I don't miss her any more.

Now that I'm big and strong, Mum's getting old and frail and long for companionship. Perhaps one day when Alex turn old and frail and wonder why Annika hasn't phoned him in weeks, I'll just have to remind him that old folks are "vampires of time" too?
